Stauffer/Rosario hearing starts

A long-delayed hearing into charges by the California Horse Racing Board that jockey Joel Rosario "did not put forward his best effort riding his horse to the finish line" in a race at Del Mar on Sept. 6 began Thursday at Hollywood Park. But testimony dragged and only three witnesses were called in nearly two hours before the hearing was adjourned until Dec. 3.

Luis Jauregui, a former jockey who is now the local safety steward, testified as a witness for the racing board, while retired Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens - now a trainer - and Darrell Haire, the Western regional manager for the Jockeys' Guild, testified on behalf of Rosario.

The charges were filed by the state racing board more than two months ago, following a complaint by John Glenney, who trains and co-owns Cedros, Rosario's mount in the 11th race on Sept. 6. According to the race's official chart, Cedros "fell back some leaving the second turn and angled in, continued along the rail in the stretch and was edged for the show." He finished a head behind the third-place finisher, Never.

Glenney at the time said that Vic Stauffer, Rosario's agent, called him after the race and inquired whether Cedros was for sale.

"After an exchange of unpleasantries, a remark was made as to whether Mr. Glenney would sell the horse," Kenneth Jones, the attorney general prosecuting the case, said during his opening remarks Thursday. "We are not presenting this case as involving a larger conspiracy. The focus is on the ride in question."

After viewing video of the race from several angles, Jauregui testified that, in his opinion, Rosario "wasn't giving it down the lane."

Stevens said he thought Cedros "was green, lacking experience," and cited several points in the race where he believed Cedros was trying to lug in.

Tom Ward, Ingrid Fermin, and Scott Chaney were the stewards at Del Mar this summer. Ward and Chaney are stewards at Hollywood Park this fall, along with Randy Winick. Chaney is scheduled to testify as a witness at the hearing. Ward was not put on the panel by the racing board. The stewards hearing the case are Winick, along with Albert Christiansen and Kim Sawyer, both of whom are currently working at Los Alamitos.

Horse names

I heard you discussing horse names and the re-use of them earlier tonight. I just heard the Woodbine announcer call "Creme Fraiche" in a harness race. I wonder if it crosses over to Standardbreds? Don't know if spelling is the same, but I do recall the winner of the Belmont Stakes in the mid-1980's had that moniker.

By the way, I'm in a hotel and was flipping through the channels when I noticed you. I'm pretty sure we've met. I own some horses, but I'm more recognizable because I'm in a band and think you might have been at one of our shows in Hollywood a few years ago. Possible?

Euro rankings show a blatant bias

Sea the Stars was awarded a ranking of 135, five clear of any other horse on the planet, with Goldikova second at 130 and Rip Van Winkle third at 129. Zenyatta manages only a tie for fourth with Fame and Glory at 128, and Rachel Alexandra gets to share a five-way tie for sixth at 125 alongside Cavalryman, Conduit, Gio Ponti, and Youmzain.

Zenyatta will be Horse of the Year

Dear Nancy,

In my opinion there's no debate Zenyatta is Horse of the Year. In fact here's a few sentences

from an article in the November 21,2009 Blood-Horse that Evan Hammonds wrote: "Did the Pittsburgh Steelers

win the Super Bowl in November? Did the New York Yankees win the World Series in August? Of course not.

They won their championships at the end of their sporting season. And just like the Super Bowl and

World Series, the Breeders' Cup World Championships are at the end of Thoroughbred racing's traditional

season. Hats off to Rachel Alexandra and her unbeaten campaign. Her wins were fantastic, stupendous, and

inspiring...they just stopped on Labor Day weekend. Perhaps in other year, she would be a runaway Horse of

the Year winner. However, 2009 was no ordinary year...Zenyatta is no ordinary horse. She ran the table

through her divisional competition from May to October, winning grade I races at all three Southern California

tracks: Hollywood, Del Mar, and Santa Anita, and three different distances. While it should take a "body of

work" to earn Horse of the Year title you still have to stand and deliver when it counts. This year, Nov. 7 was

when it counted, and Zenyatta delivered. Rachel Alexandra was in her stall." In other words Evan Hammonds is

leading me to believe he'll be voting Queen Z for Horse of the Year.

Catcher Paul Lo Duca wants back in the big leagues

Catcher Paul Lo Duca (notes) spent 10 years in the big leagues with four different teams and wasn't signed last year. Now he's apparently telling Sirius XM Radio that he wants back in, according to the New York Daily News.

Lo Duca told the satellite radio station that he's completely healthy and everything he's had surgery on (hamstring, knee) feels perfect. "I want to go back in it full bore and [do] whatever needs to be done," he said. "I want to play on a team that wants to win and wants a player that wants to win. I'll do whatever I need to do. If it's come off the bench, if it's spot starts, I'll do whatever they need me to do."

The 5'9" 36-year-old who has a .286 career average and popped only 80 homers in his ten years in the league isn't expecting to be the starting catcher for anybody. "I really feel like I can offer a good bat off the bench to somebody and do whatever needs to be done," he said.

Guess he was getting bored as a horse-racing analyst for the TVG Network.

"The key details of the Senate bill are as follows: Both public and private plans are allowed to offer abortion coverage. It empowers consumers to use government subsidies to purchase insurance that covers abortion, but requires that their premiums (and not federal funds) pay for the actual procedures. The Health and Human Services Secretary is charged with evaluating plans to ensure that taxpayers do not pay for abortions. And, while the bill requires at least one plan in each state to cover abortion, it also includes a conscience clause stating that healthcare providers cannot "be discriminated against because of a willingness or an unwillingness ... to provide, pay for, provide coverage of, or refer for abortions."
