I'm not sure, but I would have to believe Cigar's 8 G1 wins in 1995 were the most ever in one season.

Besides, I don't really care about G1 status anymore. A lot of races that are G1s should not be. Some examples include the Humana Distaff, Santa Anita Derby, and Clement Hirsch. In my opinion, we shouldn't have more than 50 G1 races, 100 G2 races, and 150 G3 races.

The current leader, I believe, is John Henry with 16.  Affirmed and Forego have 14.

Its hard to say, we have not always had these Grade one races as Graded races.

GRADED RACES HAVE BEEN CHANGING IT SEEMS TO ME -  THE TRIPLE CROWN RACES SHOULD BE ALONG WITH A FEW OTHERS - I AM NOT SURE HOW THEY APPLY THE GRADING - THE AMOUNT OF MONEY OF THE PURSES??  THE SIZE OF THE RACE TRACK??  NEED HELP - DOES ANYONE KNOW JUST HOW THIS IS DONE - WITHOUT ME HAVING TO LOOK IT ALL UP??  I AM LAZY WHEN IT COMES TO THIS KIND OF DATA -

Races are graded each year by a 10 member committee.  Races can be up or downgraded based on the level of competition, purses, etc. etc.
